SARAFINA! is a film that burns with a raw truth about life in apartheid South Africa while affirming the highest values of the human spirit. It is the story of Sarafina (Leleti Khumalo) who, like other young students of the time, adopted a campaign of resistance against the police presence in their schools. She imagines the support of her role model, Nelson Mandela, and finds an ally in her teacher, Mary Masombuka (Whoopi Goldberg), who supports the students in their cause.
Producer, Anant Singh said, “The youth have always been at the forefront of change in South Africa, and we are proud to have made SARAFINA! as a tribute to the courageous youth of 1976. More than forty years later, their story remains an inspiration to our society, and the broadcast of SARAFINA! on eMovies on the 16th of June celebrates their legacy.”
Marlon Davids, MD of e.tv channels, added, “SARAFINA! is one of South Africa’s most memorable films, and we are pleased to be able to broadcast it as we commemorate a significant day in our nation’s history. We are committed to sharing local stories that celebrate and reflect on our country’s journey and SARAFINA! tells a powerful one.”
Leleti Khumalo is also the lead actress in e.tv’s hit daily drama series Imbewu: The Seed, which is broadcast on weekdays at 21h30.
