Redefining innovation: How the HUAWEI P series has evolved since its debut

Huawei’s P series of flagship smartphones has undergone a journey of continuous evolution since the devices were first launched eight years ago.

Now the P series has become synonymous with pushing technological boundaries and delivering groundbreaking innovation that allows consumers to be more productive, efficient and creative than ever before. It is a journey that is highlighted by numerous world-firsts that push the envelope of technology and design.

With the upcoming launch of the much-anticipated HUAWEI P40 Pro, Huawei’s most advanced smartphone yet, let’s take a look at how the P series has redefined handset technology over the years.

Redefining expectations with world firsts

First introduced in 2012 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the HUAWEI Ascend P1 S was unveiled as the world’s slimmest smartphone with a 6.68 mm thin body and a 4.3-inch super AMOLED 960 x 540 touchscreen. Users were impressed with the best-in-class fast multi-tasking, video replay and gaming experience.

A year later the HUAWEI Ascend P2 became the world’s fastest smartphone with a powerful 1.5 GHz quad-core processor and LTE Cat 4 providing an ultrafast web experience with download speeds of up to 150 Mbps.

The HUAWEI Ascend P2 continued the slim theme with 8.4mm body and an infinity edge 4.7-inch IPS HD in-cell touch display.

Industry-leading camera technology

Later that same year the HUAWEI Ascend P6 blended powerful performance with the 1.5 GHz quad-core K3V2E processor and a sleek metallic body.

Add in the 4.7-inch high definition in-cell display and an industry-leading 5 MP front-facing camera, and the seeds for future innovation were laid.

This focus on innovating advanced camera technology would become a signature feature of the P series in the coming years, with Huawei devices often surpassing their competition in this field.

In 2016, the hugely anticipated HUAWEI P9 and HUAWEI P9 Plus handsets arrived and with them the company’s first collaboration with German camera manufacturer, Leica.

The HUAWEI P9’s co-engineered dual-lens took smartphone photography to the next level by allowing users to capture both vivid colours and striking black and white images.

Professional-grade photographic and video tech for all

The following year this evolution continued when the HAUWEI P10 and HUAWEI P10 Plus smartphones were introduced with not only advanced software but powerful new Leica front and back cameras. These devices came with cutting-edge portrait features to make every photo as good as a cover shot.

The rapid pace of Huawei’s R&D capability shone through in 2018 as the dual-lens camera gave way to the world’s first Leica triple camera in the HUAWEI P20 and HUAWEI P20 Pro.

This coupled with the advanced AI feature set new expectations for smartphone photography and allowed users to effortlessly capture professional grade pictures. This momentum was carried into the HUAWEI P30 and HUAWEI P30 Pro smartphones launched in 2019.

By now the P series had established itself as a flagship product that had gained the trust of consumers as groundbreaking devices. The HUAWEI P30 series built on this tradition of cutting-edge design and photographic capabilities with the most advanced smartphone cameras yet.

Consumers now had the innovative HUAWEI SuperSpectrum Sensor, an optical SuperZoom Lens, a new HUAWEI Time of Flight (ToF) Camera, and enhanced optical and AI image stabilisation technology in one device. This allowed users to capture incredibly detailed and vibrant images under almost any circumstance.

Always a step ahead of the competition

The evolution of the HUAWEI P series of smartphones has been underpinned by a philosophy of constantly redefining industry standards; now, that has never been more true than with 2020’s HUAWEI P40 Pro series.

Not only do these handsets radically expand what is possible with mobile photography but video capture technology has also now taken a huge leap in power.

The large 1/1.28-inch sensor has a binned pixel size measuring 2.44 μm, which allows the camera to massively boost light intake for enhanced low-light performance, so images taken at night are crystal clear.

A new periscope design realizes 10x true optical zoom, while the smartphone is powered by the Kirin 990 5G chipset and supports high-speed 5G and Wi-Fi 6 Plus.

The advanced hardware is embedded in a beautiful and compact enclosure featuring the HUAWEI Quad-curve Overflow Display that delivers outstanding fluidity and responsiveness.

The HUAWEI P series of smartphones have been the launchpad for a wide range of world firsts and new technologies. From the raw speed and power of HUAWEI Ascend P2 to the HUAWEI P40 series and its pioneering camera lens technology, the P series has undergone continuous evolution.

By constantly striving to do more and be better than competitors, it has set the new standard of what is possible in smartphone innovation.
